TAVI – Advanced minimally invasive procedure as an effective treatment option for the elderly who have high risks in case of open heart surgery
Aortic valve stenosis is one of the most common heart conditions found in the elderly. Due to older age, the heart’s aortic valve becomes narrow from calcium buildup on the valve. As a result, this narrowing prevents the valve from opening fully, leading to reduced or blocked blood flow from the heart into the aorta and the rest of the body. This can cause the left ventricle to thicken and enlarge. Eventually the extra work can weaken the left ventricle and ultimately lead to heart failure.
TAVI is an advanced minimally invasive procedure to repair or replace aortic valve through a catheter without open surgery. Via small incision sized 2 cm., it results in less risks and complications. A faster recovery allows the patients to have a 2-3 day hospital stay with a quick return to their daily lives.
